Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
The itineraries we create are guided by three aims: looking after the places we visit, supporting local communities and helping our guests travel responsibly. To do this, we work with a boutique team on the ground who have been running responsible trips since 1994 and share our values.Planet – Carbon reduction
This itinerary combines luxury and comfort with more time in fewer places. You'll spend several nights in each location, which means less travel between them and more time on the ground.
Many of the activities are on horseback, on foot, by bike or by kayak, such as horse riding, hiking, cycling, kayaking, stargazing and birdwatching, so you can enjoy Chile's landscapes without needing a vehicle.
Planet – Environment and wildlife
We've chosen small, characterful properties, many of which serve food grown on their own land or bought from nearby farms.
Local guides explain the landscapes and wildlife you're seeing, talk about the challenges these places face, and share practical tips on how to reduce your impact while you're there. On the trails, that means taking all rubbish out, sticking to marked paths and keeping a respectful distance from wildlife.
People
People are at the heart of everything we do. Every year, our local partners train guides in safety, service, local knowledge and responsible travel.People – Local economy
Where possible, excursions are chosen to show you the best of each destination, help you travel deeper and put money into the local community. The cooking class in Santiago, for example, uses ingredients bought from local markets, supporting local producers while sharing Chilean culinary traditions.
The properties on this itinerary are boutique hotels that often employ locally trained staff, buy food from nearby farmers and work with local artisans, so tourism revenue stays in the region.
People – Employment, inclusivity and diversity
At Vira Vira, the Mapuche cultural experience is a chance to learn from indigenous communities, and it creates income that helps them keep their cultural identity and traditions alive.
In the Atacama, you can learn about the Lickanantay (Atacameño) culture and the ancient history of the region.
