No single supplement holidays

There are many small group holidays where sharing a room, cabin or tent with someone you have just met is quite simply the only way to do things, because of accommodation availability, and many great friendships have been made that way. It also makes small group travel great value for solo travellers who are happy to do so. Many travellers get used to packing ear plugs for snoring roommates, donning head lamps so that they can read at night without disturbing their comatose chum, and swapping life stories at bedtime. However, for those who like their space and don’t want to pay a supplement for the pleasure, some tour operators offer holidays with no extra charge for a room of own.
On most trips, travellers are charged for the cost of a room, not a bed. So two people sharing get to split the room rate in half. But given that increasing numbers of people are choosing to travel without friends, partners or family, some trips are designed to better cater for these travellers by not charging a single supplement. This happens particularly on special interest and learning holidays, where solos are often in the majority. If this sounds like your kind of trip, read on. No reading light required.
Photography holidays

Photography holidays

Photographers value solitude and space, silence and slowing down and perhaps that is why some of our specialist photography holidays have plenty of supplement free trips on their books. Such as a Northern Lights and volcanic landscapes photography holiday where you can sleep solo at no extra cost in a warm, comfortable hotel accommodation right on Lake Mývatn.
In Myanmar, where you stay in remote, family run hotels or guesthouses as opposed to government run ones, everyone is welcomed at the same price, whatever your travelling status. Bravo to the photography and wildlife holiday hosts in the Spanish Pyrenees who accommodate solo travellers in their own rooms at the same price as everyone else in their traditional, restored Pyrenean farmhouse in the hamlet of Albella. Because, when it comes to fairness for solo travellers, photographers are getting the picture.

Safaris sans supplements

Safaris sans supplements

Out of Africa doesn’t mean being out of pocket on some safari holidays, if you are seeking your own room to collapse in peace and contemplate the wonders of the day. Or to just lie in peace and listen to the sounds of hippos splashing in a nearby river or the cacophony of birds swooping in for evensong. Our safari single stars include our Uganda gorilla trekking experts who guarantee that both their gorilla trekking and Rwenzori holiday and their gorilla and game safari holiday are supplement free.
One of our most unusual safaris is a sea kayaking holiday in Indonesia that takes you to the land of the fearsome komodo dragon. Paddle around islands, to remote beaches and over coral reef on a trip that at points feels like journeying to the centre of the earth. While seeing komodo dragons prowl their native habitat is a spectacular experience, they’re not exactly the cutest. And if it’s cuteness you’re after then you’ll find it among the famous lemurs of Madagascar. You can have your own room (or tent) in the hotels, simple bungalows and riverbank camps on this wonderful Madagascar wildlife activity holiday.
No premium in the Picos

No premium in the Picos

We love the Picos de Europa in Northern Spain. The small communities of this stunning mountain range are independent and enterprising thinkers and so it is not surprising to us that they offer lots of supplement free accommodation for solo travellers. Or ‘suplemento individual' we should say, because many of our holidays in this region are about combining landscape with language learning. Making Spanish language and walking holidays or Spanish and yoga holidays muy, muy Buenos. You can also walk parts of the Camino de Santiago and learn Spanish in the Picos de Europa Mountains with a room for solo travellers at no extra cost. Amen to that, we say.
Travelling light in Thailand

Travelling light in Thailand

Thailand has long been the terrain of solo travellers and so it is wonderful to see that some tour operators are now embracing this heritage with no supplements for single occupancy. This marine conservation holiday in Thailand offers single rooms at no extra cost, their focus being the cost of modern life on their seas and reefs, and if you choose to come and volunteer here on your own, you will be welcomed with open arms, a room of your own and a lot of enthusiasm for what really matters to them.
