Responsible tourism: Italy cycling and food holiday, Abruzzo
Environment
On this tour of lovely Abruzzo you will cycle about 90 km in five days, passing through breathtaking scenery and picturesque villages. The easy pace of this cycling trip will allow you to thoroughly enjoy your natural surroundings in an eco-friendly way, taking in views of the coastline as you reach gentle hilltops and observing the native flora and wildlife of the region.Your route pedals past vineyards planted with local grapes like the Trebbiano D'Abruzzo, Passerina, Pecorino and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, as well as olive groves and natural reserves established to help protect the area’s geography and habitats. As part of our commitment to the principles of AITR (Italian Association for Responsible Tourism) we have crafted this tour to best reflect the authentic and unique character of Abruzzo, including visits to the historic villages of Caporciano and Loreto with their characteristic churches and monasteries whose ancient walls tell centuries-old stories to passersby, which helps towards their maintenance.
Community
Food, wine and olive oil abound on this culinary cycling tour which takes you across the fertile valleys and hills of Abruzzo. Along the route you will be introduced to the places and faces of this prolific territory, allowing you to establish direct relationships with the people who tend the land and have crafted livelihoods out of growing, producing, marketing and selling products of the highest quality made in harmony with the natural environment. The tour on two-wheels includes stops at local wineries and olive oil farms, and one-on-one conversations with local artisans, allowing them to continue these age-old traditions. Tastings and dinners feature regional products such as Aprutino Pescarese DOP olive oil, Abruzzo’s gold-colored saffron and the region’s most precious edible: the white truffle. Your delectable exploration of this unique terroir will be led by a locally employed guide who will share the history of this beautiful territory with you and give you an insider’s look at life in Abruzzo, where your spending money will add great economic value to the region.
