Tips and advice
Uroš Kumer is the founder of specialist Croatia sailing company Frontier Adriatic:
Know before you book
“Customers must be aware that sailing holidays are totally dependent on the weather and despite agreed itinerary they need to be ready for alternative routes and stops. Luckily Croatia has numerous islands, bays and villages and islands are so close that there are plenty of alternatives that we can organize – they won’t be deprived of anything. Another thing is that they must know that sailing boats, no matter how big, are very small in comparison to their homes or other holiday facilities, especially toilets and showers and that the boat is always moving/rocking and you can hear some sounds during the night (sea splashing against the boat, ropes hitting against the mast....) – this is all normal and not at all disturbing if you take it as it is but some may have a problem with this.”
When is the best time to go?
“We love sailing in Croatia in late April, May, June and September. In these periods it is less crowded and once you reduce crowds everything is nicer, calmer and cleaner. The weather is also good in this period and also important it is more affordable… If possible avoid July and August as Croatia has been a hot spot in the last few years and yes we get overtourism in these 2 months. Of course with overtourism we face higher pollution as well.”

Dominik Sarapata from our specialist sailing company Naleia Yachting has this advice:
What to expect from sailing courses
“Our Sailing skills training course is mostly for people who want to improve their boat maneuvering skills, so it's for people with experience. We are focusing on mooring and port maneuvers. On the other hand, all of our other sailing trips are suitable for total novices as well as sailors with experience. This is because on one hand the skipper explains the basics to the new comers and basically goes through the curriculum of RYA Competent Crew course, but on the other hand the skipper can give command to the fresh skippers or sailors who are learning to become one.”
What to bring with you
“Bring musical instruments if you play any and rubber ducks, floating pizzas, unicycle and anything that can make our trips more fun. Remember also to bring some goodies from your country to spread the cultural and culinary knowledge. People should also know that boats have limited space on board and they should bring backpacks or foldable bags instead of hardcover suitcases. Also, if people come solo they will be sharing their cabin with a person of the same sex (there are bunk beds and double beds).”

“Our crew were very aware of environment impacts affecting their seas, Croatia is a clean country & the seas are remarkably free of plastic. When we stopped in one of the bays it had litter that had washed up so we got bags & collected all the plastic washup with the crew.” – Wendy Potgieter
“Pack light! The catamaran cabins have ample cubbies/drawers for storage, but not much room for a suitcase, so a duffle bag is preferable. Remember sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses, and of course a bathing suit.” – Sue Johnson
“The season closes the middle of Oct so book between Sept and then to beat the summer crowds.” – Kim Vargas
