Multi activity holidays in Greece

Something about Greece lends itself to the epic. It could be the 6,000 islands flung out over more than 200,000km², or the northern pine forests, where bears and wolves plod millennia-old paths. The sea is alive with creatures, too, from prehistoric-looking sea turtles to giant pods of dolphins. The mountains, meanwhile, are the traditional realm of the gods – ambrosial wildflower meadows included.

Don’t worry, though: the holiday companies we work with will make sure that your multi activity holiday in Greece is a little smoother than Achilles’ epic journey in The Odyssey by swapping the stormy seas for glassy Aegean bays and teaming you up with local guides who know exactly how to navigate the roaring rivers and gorges.

Greek Islands or the mainland?

Some of our most popular multi activity holidays to Greece steer away from the crowded beaches and ferry terminals, and towards the Greece that Greeks would like you to see. The Peloponnese peninsula on the Greek mainland offers some of the most scenic rafting waters in in Greece along the Louiso River, bike trails that hook together ancient cities like Arcadia and Alea, the kayak-friendly Messinian Gulf, and hikeable monastery-topped mountains.

Meanwhile, activity holidays in the Greek Islands tend to pair up bikes and boats. You’ll cruise from island to island in a yacht or small ship – perhaps stopping over at Kythnos and its sea-view cycle paths, tourist-free Seriphos for valley villages, or the sunlounger-free snorkelling beaches of Sifnos.

Other Greek Island holidays stick to one island – say, Ithaca, the home of legendary wanderer Achilles. Here, you can get your PADI scuba diving qualification, plus paddle in seas that are home to endangered Mediterranean monk seals.

Getting from place to place relies on bikes, boats and hiking boots, so these multi activity holidays are really low impact. You’ll support tiny village tavernas and Greek-run hotels with your euros; kayaking trips will often include a break for litter-picking in remote mountain-backed coves that scoop up rubbish from fish farms and tourists.

Small group or tailor made?

Small group holidays run on set dates, usually between June and October. You’ll join a group of 14-20 people and follow a planned activity itinerary. You can join as a family, couple, friends or as a solo traveller; there’s usually a supplement for single travellers who’d like their own room.

Tailor made activity holidays are designed just for you. This is often a good choice for families with very young children, as you can jigsaw together suitable activities. Just keep an eye on your budget when pick ‘n’ mixing – the price of the holiday will totally depend on your choice of activities, so a white water rafting adventure will be more expensive than a cycling or hiking holiday.

All holidays last around a week, and include your accommodation, local guides, some meals, most activities, and transport. You’ll probably need to pack your own reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel and mask, and cycling accessories.

How active is active?

The activity level is noted on each individual holiday. Leisurely trips are suitable for families with children aged from seven upwards, and includes level cycling and easy, interesting hikes. Cycling holidays are usually moderate, as you’ll be riding for 4-6 hours a day. Your holiday company will build in free time, so you can take a day or two to crash at the beach or catch the bus to one of the thousands of archaeological wonders casually strewn around Greece. Tailor made holidays will shape the holiday to your activity capabilities.

When is the best time to go on a multi activity holiday to Greece?

Small group holidays usually run from May to October – and certain dates book up quickly with families working to a summer holiday schedule. Tailor made holidays are great if you’d prefer to go off-season (say, late April or October), when temperatures creep down from the 30°Cs and the bulk of the tourists and cruise ships return home.
